Compression Springs provide resistance to external load pressure. Compression springs are generally wire coiled with equal pitch and have a fixed wire diameter. Compression springs use multiple open coils to provide resistance to external load pressure (such as gravity pressing down on a wheel, or a body pressing down on a mattress), that is, they push back to resist external pressure. Round wire is the most common compression spring, but there are also compression springs made of square, rectangular and special shapes of wire. In addition, there are conical compression springs, or springs with a combination of conical and straight shapes. Depending on the application, compression springs can be used to resist pressure and/or store energy.
